Check out this beautiful San Antonio wedding with our gorgeous multi-colored personalized papel picado banners!  The bride and groom, Corey and Lydia, decided to go with a plus sign symbol (+) instead of a "&"symbol or a heart sign in between their names and it looked amazing!  They also used our tissue paper heart shaped cupcake toppers to decorate their cupcakes with - totally love them on display!  I truly enjoyed seeing my cake topper on top of their fantastic wedding cake - adorable!  Check out Bend the Light's blog to see more pictures!

Calavera Press was at Austin's Viva La Vida Festival and Parade as part of Mexic-Arte Museum's annual Day of the Dead celebration.  What a fun and colorful event full of amazing artists, musicians, food, and people!  We shared a booth with Etsy shops Viva La Fiesta, who specializes in custom pinatas for fiestas and Rockin' Sugar Skulls, who have a Dia de los Muertos themed shop with hand-painted skulls, coffin jewelry boxes, Day of the Dead pinatas, and much more!  We were happy to hear people in Austin were thrilled to find local artists of Mexican inspired goods.  Mission accomplished! We got to get the word out about our craft in papel picado artistry, pinatas, and hand-painted calaveras.  Enjoy some photos of the festivities!

Photo Shoot!

I had a fun day taking pictures of papel picado banners we made for clients.  Jeanette has the most beautiful smile and looks like she's having fun decorating with a multicolor pennant for a festive occasion! I had a custom order request for a banner with three messages: 7/20/13, Thank You, and Carrie & Luke.  The clients are going to use it to take pictures and send to their loved ones in the form of a Thank You postcard.  I love the idea and had to capture some pictures to make it available for other clients to do the same.  Finally, I had them take a picture of a single papel picado flag to show how beautiful it looks to take pictures with and use it to make a unique memory of a special event.  I especially love to see a papel picado flag framed and displayed as a beautiful memento of a joyous wedding celebration.  My husband and I have the sacred heart banner with our names and wedding date framed and displayed in our living room and always get compliments when we have guests over at our house. It also serves as a reminder of our wedding anniversary (wink, wink), so neither one of us forget!  We just celebrated our 17 year wedding anniversary and it is nice to see our hard work, both in our marriage and business, that our marriage has withheld throughout the years.  What a beautiful way to honor our love and dedication!

New Items from Calavera Press

Summer time is the time to celebrate!  There are many fiestas in the works with many clients requesting the cutest colors and adding a touch of personalization to their themed fiesta.  I just made the cutest cake topper for a child's 2nd birthday fiesta.  She requested multi-colored cupcake toppers and a matching cake topper for her child's smash cake.  I added a new touch to the cake topper with tissue paper at the top of the wooden dowel sticks to make it a more festive decoration.  Totally love it!

I also was asked to create a mini banner for a customer who wants to hang it in her bedroom, above her bed.  She asked for 4" x 6" flags and the word 'AMOR.'  Ask and you shall receive!  It looks amazing!  I photographed it with the calavera wedding couple cake topper because I think it would beautiful to hang behind the cake table.

I enjoy being a papel picado artisan and appreciate my customers special requests.  I welcome custom orders!  Arriba to many fiestas and cheers to life, love, and happiness!

Hard at work ~ Hand-cut Papel Picado Banners

Calavera Press working on beautifully hand-cut papel picado banners, banderitas, and mini banderitas.

Most of the outdoor celebrations seen throughout Mexico are decorated using papel picado. Panels of intricately pierced tissue paper are threaded on long strands of string, and hung in villages between rooftops, across porches, and inside ballrooms. Papel picado is a “must have” decoration for any Mexican themed fiesta.

During the 19th century, in the era of the haciendas, laborers purchased all of their necessities from the hacienda store. Most of these stores stocked papel de China, or Chinese paper, known in English as tissue paper. The laborers began to use the paper available to them to create elaborate decorations for their festivities, possible producing extra so that they could sell them to other haciendas. In time, the laborers developed into artisans, advancing the craft of papel picado to an art form, and passing the skill on to each new generation.

Today, the descendants of these laborers are still producing papel picado.  Using straight pins, and metal chisels, the artisans carefully carve their designs into the paper, cutting away the unneeded portions to reveal their designs. Careful thought is given as to which portion of the paper should be removed, so that the design is clear, but the paper remains resilient.

Papel picado is truly an art and a creative way to decorate any festivity!  Love is in the air, lots of baby shower and wedding orders are in the works.  Congratulations to our fiesta clients on their upcoming special events.  Que viva la fiesta!

Cheers y Salud,
